Hungarian French Toast Recipe (Bundás Kenyér)

I grew few kilometers away from Hungary and some of the people in my city would call this Bundás Kenyér. Later, I found out it’s called French toast in many other places and, since Hungarians are the ones that inspired my family, we’ll give them credit.

Whether you call it Bundás Kenyér or simply french toast, here are 2 easy french toast recipes (sweet and savory).

My grandmother used to make the sweet one, my mother in law is making the savory one. There’s just a little difference (we add sugar into the sweet one), so both can be mentioned:

Simple French Toast Recipe Ingredients

  • 3 eggs
  • 5 slices of bread (ideally stale), I usually make french toast from 2-3 day old bread
  • a bowl of milk
  • a pinch of salt
  • sugar to tast (if you make the sweet version)

How to make the fluffy french toast recipe

  • Heat vegetable oil in a pan.
  • Take one slice of the bread, put it in the plate/bowl filled with milk (for the sweet option, you put the sugar in the milk beforehand, for the savory option, you don’t use sugar at all). Don’t keep it too much, we want it a bit moist, not slushy.
  • Move the slice into the eggs bowl (you beat the eggs beforehand) and turn on the other side, so that it’s well covered.
  • Put into the pan and fry on a side, until golden brown (not too dark) and then turn on the other side.
  • Take out and have it rest on a plate with a paper towel on it (to take out some of the remaining oil).
  • Daughter loves to eat it with honey / jam.
